Creating a charactor is as much about you as it is the charactor you're trying create.
Charactors are as real as you want them to be and 'realness' is determined by how much detail you want to put in to that charactor's story.
the first question i ask myself when creating a charactor is, is this a "noise" charactor, meaning does this charactor have any impact on the story or is this charactor just there to make the world seem more populated?
if this charactor is not a noise charactor then the next question i would ask myself is, Where in the world does this Charactor fit in?
depending on where in the story this charactor is, determines the amount of detail you need to put in to him/her to make him seem real and atleast, less like a robot.
With making charactors, its all about trying to make thier stories flow. If you can intertwine charactors stories with each other, it makes both of those charactors seem so much more real as they have history, and it makes the viewer/reader feel like they are real charactors.
